Routers & Switches
Our PCB solutions for routers and switches are engineered to handle high-speed data transmission, complex signal routing, and thermal management in a compact form factor. They are the backbone of networking infrastructure, from home Wi-Fi to data center switches.
Key PCB Requirements for Routers and Switches
High-Speed Signal Integrity: The primary function of routers and switches is to move data at high speeds (1 Gbps, 10 Gbps, 100 Gbps, and beyond). This requires PCBs that can maintain signal integrity over long traces. We use materials with a low dielectric constant (ϵr) and a low dissipation factor (tanδ) to minimize signal loss and distortion. Controlled impedance routing is critical; we precisely control trace width, spacing, and distance to the ground plane to ensure a consistent impedance (typically 50 ohms) and prevent signal reflections.
High Layer Count and Density: Networking devices are packed with ICs, memory modules, and high-density connectors, necessitating a high number of layers to manage complex signal and power routing. We specialize in fabricating high-layer-count PCBs (up to 30 layers or more) and High-Density Interconnect (HDI) PCBs. HDI technology, using microvias and finer lines, allows for greater component density and shorter signal paths, which is crucial for high-speed performance.
Thermal Management: The processors, ASICs, and power components in routers and switches generate a significant amount of heat. Effective heat dissipation is vital for performance and reliability. We provide solutions such as heavy copper PCBs to act as internal heat sinks, and metal core PCBs that use a thermally conductive metal substrate to efficiently transfer heat away from critical components. We also work with designers to optimize the placement of vias to improve heat dissipation to the board's surface.
Power Integrity: A stable and clean power supply is essential for the reliable operation of sensitive high-speed components. We ensure robust power integrity through dedicated power and ground planes with proper decoupling capacitor placement. This minimizes noise and voltage fluctuations, which can otherwise corrupt high-speed data signals.
Miniaturization and Space Efficiency: With the push for smaller, more powerful devices, space is at a premium. Our expertise in miniaturization through HDI and advanced routing techniques allows us to accommodate complex circuitry in a compact form factor, enabling smaller and more powerful networking devices. This is particularly important for consumer-grade routers and compact enterprise switches.
